You can’t necessarily plan for a bad day, but you can plan what you’re going to do on a bad day.
This thought occurred to me as I was reflecting on my interview with Chris Naish. Or, more accurately, what he said seemed to affirm my thought process.
What Chris said was that bad days are inevitable, so being prepared is good sense. I don’t necessarily think that you should expect bad days – there’s a fine line right there – but thinking ahead and being ready with games, books, movies, or TV shows that make you happy is smart and rather profound. I think there may be a fine line between rest and indulgence, and that’s where we have to exercise some caution.
Maybe you need to sit yourself down in a coffee shop and reflect for a while (people don’t take enough time to reflect in this day and age). Maybe you need to get together with a trusted friend and just talk it through. Maybe you need to pray or meditate. Maybe you need to spend some time in the outdoors (going for a walk is still a great way to clear your head and find new inspiration). Find out what you need to do to get through a bad day.
I know that I often talk about productivity and efficiency, but I also believe down time and rest is important. When you get sufficient rest, you can bring the best version of yourself to your work, social interactions and recreation. When you’re down, everything tends to suffer. You won’t be nearly as effective as when you are energized and excited about life. Trying to push through and work even when you’re having a tough time could prove counterproductive.
I think that’s what got me thinking about this. We all need to find what recharges and refreshes us. As entrepreneurs, long hours, sacrifice, and difficult situations are almost a given. The rest of the world may take two days to drink, have fun and recuperate, but an entrepreneur is more likely to be engaging in meaningful work on a daily basis. So, what do you do with your down time? What gets you motivated to take on the rest of your week? What gets you energized, excited and inspired to keep going?
