Haters gonna hate, right? You could go out on a limb to create your life’s best work and market it to the masses only to get barraged by childish, lazy skepticism and criticism. Does it mean you should give up?
No way. If you’ve been following along with this blog for any amount of time, you already know the importance of perseverance. The book I read says that troubles and tribulations are practically a guarantee. You will inevitably run into some walls as you build your career or business.
It can be discouraging; there’s no denying that. However, withholding retaliation, holding your ground and keeping your faith might just change the opinion of those who oppose you. They might see you or your creations in a new light. Even if not, you can at least keep your dignity by refusing to get involved in unproductive controversy.
What many people don’t realize is that the path to success practically requires failure. You have to fail, learn from your mistakes, iterate and aim for progressive improvement. You shouldn’t fail for failure’s sake, but your path is likely to contain a few obstacles and trials.
You have to take action. You have to become a doer. Action is the only cure to fear. It’s one of the main things that will separate you from the pack. Talent, ability and even knowledge can’t outmatch a hardworking, action-taking person. Winners take action and learn from their failures; losers are too afraid to try.
If you find yourself on the brunt end of unwanted, unsolicited, unnecessary or inordinate criticism, here are some important things to remember.
Negativity and Skepticism Epitomize Laziness
Don’t pay too much attention to the peanut gallery; they probably aren’t doing anything of note with their lives anyway.
People who criticize what they haven’t actually taken the time to understand are just plain lazy. It’s easy to make fun of or criticize what you haven’t properly researched. You don’t know what you don’t know.
Winners try to find the merit in everything; losers are negative even when it’s uncalled for.
Constructive Criticism is in Scarce Supply
If people always offered constructive feedback, we wouldn’t have this problem. It takes effort to think and to make worthwhile suggestions. It takes effort to add value and raise valid points. Unfortunately, short-form interaction is becoming all the more popular with social media. People who post “this sucks” clearly aren’t invested in what you’re doing. It’s best to let it roll off of you.
Winners look for ways to add value and to be a part of the solution; losers are only interested in their own affairs.
Objection and Rejection are two different things
People might object to your business concepts. They may not like what you have to say. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they are negative. Skepticism can be constructive if the skeptical person is actually seeking relevant answers in order to make a more informed decision.
Objections should not be equated with personal rejection. People may not like what you do, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t like you. Don’t take yourself or matters too seriously if that is the case.
Winners ask meaningful questions that lead people on the right path; losers resort to blanket statements.
There will always be Dream-Stealers and Nay-Sayers
As you begin to make progress towards your dreams and visions, there will be those who will try to distract you and pull you away from your priorities. They want to be excited and fired up about their dreams as much as you are, but unfortunately they have too much personal baggage to believe that they could ever accomplish more in life.
You may have to consciously spend less time with these people. You don’t have to cut them out of your life, but their intentions are unproductive at best, harmful at worst.
Winners strive to help others reach their goals and realize their dreams; losers are only interested in their own security.
